The area is unusual in that the beach runs east & west, not north & south. The weather offers typically warm temperatures and clear skies, especially in the evening. The climate is more moderate than Arizona, being slightly cooler in the summer and slightly warmer in the winter. The beautiful beaches and warm water of Rocky Point are only one hour south of the border at Lukeville, AZ. Driving distance from Phoenix and Tucson is approximately four hours making it an ideal driving vacation. The discovery of blue shrimp in the waters off Cerro de Peņasco in 1920, led to the establishment of Rocky Point. Initially water had to be trucked in from the border town of Sonoyta, 60 miles away. That trail is now Mex. Route 8, paved during WWII, allowing for shrimping to expand greatly in the 1950's. As recently as this year fuel cost and overshrimping have cause many boats to remain in port, however during the year a variety of fish such as snapper, sea bass, flounder and pink and white shrimp are abundant in the popular waterfront fish markets. The town retains the charm of a simple fishing village and local restaurants are plentiful. While shrimping and fishing are important to the local economy, tourism is becoming more important. Many changes are occuring now; the waterfront has a marina under construction, to allow for boats to have many stopping points along the Sea of Cortez, beginning at Cabo San Lucas, north to Rocky Point, then east and south to Acapulco and beyond. Golf courses are soon to be opened, and the possibility of Las Vegas style gambling is under consideration.
